Smart Garden Products – solar lighting for your al fresco space
Now that summer is in full swing it’s an ideal time to incorporate some solar lights into your outdoor space, whether it’s to welcome you home or create ambience in your garden.
Solar lights are ideal for outdoor use as they don’t require any mains wiring. There are no AC electrical concerns and no unsightly cables – they’re an an instant lighting solution. Not having wires also means they can be moved around your garden whenever the mood takes you – even placed on a balcony. As if that wasn’t enough, once purchased, there are no running costs!
The light output of solar lights is measured in lumens, the internationally recognised unit of brightness. The higher the lumen number, the brighter the light. Most solar lights emit 1-2 lumens, however brighter lights can emit 5, 10, 50 or even 500 lumens.
All solar lights contain an internal rechargeable battery which is charged by sunlight through the solar panel. The actual light is generated by one or more LEDs, which are similar to those used in modern domestic light fittings and car headlights. They contain a light sensor which automatically switches on the light at dusk, and typically operate for between 4-8 hours, depending on how bright a day it’s been and the actual light itself. So on brighter days, more power is put into the battery and the light will stay on longer at night.
If you are looking for lights to mark pathways, borders, patios or illuminate garden features, stake lights or spot lights might be the solution you’re looking for. Stake lights come in a variety of designs, typically in a pagoda or bollard shape. They contain a glass lens which refracts the light and projects a pool of illumination around the stake itself. Spotlights can be angled and project brighter light in a specific direction.
If you want really bright light to welcome you home or as a security measure, you should consider PIR lights. These are significantly brighter than stake lights and will typically operate using a PIR detector (motion activated).
Decorative solar lights come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Some of them look so much like garden ornament you wouldn’t even know they were lights until they came on! They can be placed in garden borders, on patios, or on tables – or even hung from trees, bushes or garden stakes. Products like solar flowers, in-lit animals, bright eye resin figurines, and lanterns can bring a stylish or whimsical touch to any outdoor space. A perfect fusion of light and décor – décor by day, light by night.
Another popular type of solar lights are strings of bulbs that can be strung along bushes, fences, railings, umbrellas, pathways to create an extended lighting effect, all powered from one solar panel. Ideal for balconies, patios, and urban gardens.
